Mercy College Men's Basketball Topped by No. 18 C.W. Post 58-40

BROOKVILLE, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team was defeated by C.W. Post, ranked No. 18 in the nation, on Wednesday night by a score of 58-40. The Mavericks' record falls to 8-18 overall and 7-12 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

Senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 boards. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) registered eight points and grabbed three rebounds. For the Mavericks it was a tale of two halves. In the first half Mercy shot a solid 47.6 percent, but was held to 21.1 percent in the second frame.

The first half was a tight battle with and the score remained close until a three-pointer by Gilbert Montalvo gave the Pioneers an 11-point lead (26-15) with 6:23 remaining. However, the Mavericks responded with a three-pointer from guard Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) and then Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) connected on a lay-up, which was followed by two free throws from Flowers to cut the lead to six (30-24) with 1:43 remaining.

With just 10 seconds left in the half Guy nailed a jumper to cut the lead to four. The Mavericks went into the locker room trailing 32-28.

The Pioneers (23-3, 18-1 ECC) got off to a quick start in the second stanza hitting back-to-back three-pointers from Brandon Butler and Wesley Matthews to build a 10-point lead (40-30). Butler then hit two more shots from downtown to go up 48-33, capping off a 14-5 run.The Mavericks were unable to mount a comeback the rest of the way.

The Pioneers held the edge in rebounding 31 to 28 and in steals 12 to 3.

Butler and Jonathan Schmidt led the Pioneers in scoring with 13 points each. Matthews chipped in with 12 points.

The Mavericks will finish off its regular season when they travel to play Bridgeport on Saturday.
