Wellington Eclipses 1,000 Career Points, But Spartans Edge Mercy 63-51
SPARKILL, NY – Senior guard
Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) reached the
1,000 points scored plateau, but the Mavericks dropped an East
Coast Conference (ECC) contest to St. Thomas Aquinas College on
Saturday by a score of 63-51. The Mavericks’ record falls to
8-17 overall and 7-11 in the ECC.
Wellington led the Mavericks in scoring with 21 points and was
6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Keiron Guy
(Brooklyn, NY) notched a double-double with 11 points and
13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley,
NY) added six points and three assists.
The Spartans (14-11, 10-8 ECC) began the game on a 7-0 run and then
extended the lead to 13-2 on a Chris Williams lay-up. The Mavericks
crept closer with 10:04 remaining in the first half when forward
Justin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY) nailed a
three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven (17-10).
However, the Spartans closed out the half on a 17-4 run with
trifectas from Akeem Comas and Brian Harnischfeger to cap off the
run. The Mavericks went into the locker room trailing 39-19.
The Mavericks turned the tables around on the Spartans and
outscored them 32 to 24 in the second half, but were not able to
cut the lead to any less than 12 points.
Wellington reached the 1,000 career points milestone with 7:18
remaining in the half on a three-pointer that cut the lead to 17
(52-35). Despite Wellington’s achievement, the Mavericks were
unable to gain any momentum to go on an extended run.
The Mavericks shot at a 41.4 percent clip in the second half and
were 5-for-11 from downtown. But Mercy was only able to get to the
line six times the entire game, perhaps because of the presence of
6-foot-5 Comas who had three blocked shots.
Ra Chase recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 boards. He
was 9-of-10 from the floor. Comas scored 18 points and was 4-of-6
from downtown.
The Mavericks were out rebounded 42 to 26 and grabbed only six
offensive rebounds.
Mercy will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to play
conference-leader C.W. Post.
