Mercy's Chanze Wellington Named ECC Men's Basketball Player of the Week and Earns Spot on PrestoSports/MBWA Honor Roll
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College senior men's basketball player Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley HS) has been named East Coast Conference (ECC) Baden Player of the Week and claimed a spot on the PrestoSports/Met Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced on Monday.
A 5-foot-8 guard, Wellington led Mercy to a pair of big wins, keeping the Mavericks in the hunt for an ECC Tournament spot. He averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists, while shooting a blistering 70 percent (14-20) from the field overall, including 78.6 percent (11-14) from three-point distance.
In Mercy's 59-56 victory at Adelphi on Wednesday, Wellington netted 19 points with a near perfect performance, hitting 7-of-8 from the floor and going 5-of-6 behind the arc, to go with seven rebounds and five assists. It was Mercy's first win at Adelphi on record and completed the Mavericks' first ever regular season series sweep of the Panthers. He followed up with 20 points in an 80-64 win over Molloy on Saturday, converting 7-of-12 from the field, including 6-of-8 three-pointers.
Wellington currently leads the team in scoring on the year, averaging 12.6 points per game, ranks among the national leaders in three-point field goal percentage at 43.9 percent, and is closing in on 1,000 career points, now with 991.
The Mavericks will return to action on Saturday, February 23, when they travel to St. Thomas Aquinas College for another key ECC matchup, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
