Mavericks Drop 78-50 Decision to NYIT
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team had three players reach double figures in scoring, but were defeated by the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Saturday by a score of 78-50. The Mavericks' record drops to 6-16 overall and 5-10 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) led the Mavericks in scoring with 12 points and brought down four rebounds. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) scored 10 points and had seven boards. Senior guard Victor Sidberry (Bronx, NY) added 10 points off the bench and senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
Bryant Lassister capped off an 8-0 run with a three-pointer to begin the game for the Bears. The Mavericks got on the board with a jumper by Jordan given to him on a slick pass from senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY).
Bears' guard Daniel Berg nailed a trifecta with 9:23 remaining in the first half to extend its lead 16 (24-8). Wellington got the Mavericks into double figures on a shot from downtown to cut into the lead. But NYIT added on when Lassiter hit another three-pointer to go up by a score of 38-16, and the Bears extended the margin to 42-17 at the half.
The Bears picked up where they left off with back-to-back three-pointers from Kirk Stewart and Lassiter to stretch the lead to 50-23. The Mavericks got solid minutes from Sidberry off the bench, who set Mercy off on a run. First, Sidberry drove the lane and connected on a lay-up and then Jordan put down a strong slam.
But the Bears continued to hit its shots from downtown as Andre Wright hit a three-pointer as did Truman Montgomery.
NYIT shot 12-for-26 from long range and out rebounded Mercy 41 to 34. Lassiter led the Bears in scoring with 15 points.
The Mavericks will be back in action when they travel to Adelphi on Wednesday.
