Dowling Takes Mercy College Men's Basketball with Second Half Run, 64-51

OAKDALE, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 64-51 decision at the hands of host Dowling on Saturday. The Mavericks are now 6-14 overall, and 5-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.

Mercy senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) led all players with 24 points, going 11-of-18 from the field and 2-for-4 at the charity stripe, and added six rebounds. Freshman guard Jimmy Gunville (Raynham, MA) chipped in 12 points on 4-of-8 from long distance for the Mavericks.

Dowling (5-14, 5-8 ECC) raced out to a 10-0 lead and stretched it to as many as 13 at 17-4 on the strength of 11 points from David Seagers. Mercy responded by scoring the next 11 points, getting a pair of three-point buckets from Gunville, to pull within two at 17-15 with 7:10 left in the opening half.

Keith Nandin hit a three for Dowling to stop the run, but the Mavericks closed out the first half by outscoring the Golden Lions 10-5 to knot the contest at 25-25 after a Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) jumper right before the break.

The two teams traded baskets early in the second frame before Dowling went on a 19-6 run, building the margin to 48-35 with 10:19 to go. The Mavericks were able to pull within 10 at 49-39 on a Flowers jumper, but could not draw any closer the rest of the way.

Seagers finished with 19 points to lead Dowling, and dished out six assists. James St. Roberts and Genc Selimi each registered double-doubles for the Golden Lions. St. Roberts netted 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Selimi pitched in 12 points and recorded a game-high 17 boards.

The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, February 6, when they travel to Concordia for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
