Mercy Men's Basketball Pulls Out 70-69 Victory in Double OT Thriller
DOBBS FERRY - The Mercy College men's basketball team pulled out a big 70-69 victory in double overtime against New Haven on Thursday. Mercy improved its record 6-13 overall and 5-7 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.
Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) led the Mavericks in scoring by netting 20 points and grabbing six rebounds. Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) continued his solid play by recording a double-double with 19 points, 13 boards and seven steals. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Chargers (9-10, 5-7 ECC) hit its first two shots to gain a 5-0 lead, but Mercy came right back with a lay-up by Jordan and a trifecta by Marin. Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) scored the first of his 11 points of the night with a lay-up to give the Mavericks a 7-5 lead.
The first half remained close, but the Chargers built a seven point lead going into the half (33-26) on the strength of jumpers by Tetrick Stonar and Darryl Greene.
In the second half the Mavericks picked up the tempo and quickly took the lead on the strength of a 10-0 run. The run starred Marin and Flowers who each scored four points to give the Mavericks a 47-37 lead.
The Chargers began its comeback when Greene was fouled and finished the lay-up to bring the lead down to three (51-48). The teams traded buckets the next few times down the floor.
With Mercy leading by three points and just seven seconds remaining, the Chargers gave the ball to Stonar who attempted a shot from downtown and was fouled. Stonar made all three free throws to send the game to overtime (56-56).
The Mavericks scored the first points of overtime with a Flowers lay-up, but the Chargers tied the game at 58 with a lay-up of their own by Cassius Chaney. With 11 seconds remaining, Wellington hit two free throws to give the Mavericks a four-point advantage.
On New Haven's next possession, Greene was fouled. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but Kelvin Jackson grabbed the rebound for New Haven. With just four seconds left, Stonar hit a shot from behind the arc to yet again send the game to another overtime session (65-65).
In the second overtime, Stonar penetrated the lane and finished strong to give the Chargers a 69-67 lead with 1:11 remaining. Then with 38 seconds on the clock, Flowers was again sent to the line where he drained both shots from the charity stripe to tie the game at 69.
On the ensuing Charger possession, Flowers stepped in front of Greene's pass and was fouled going down to the other end of the floor. Flowers made the first free throw, but didn't connect on the second. Off the miss, Chaney grabbed the rebound where he found Greene who missed a lay-up. Stonar grabbed the board and went straight up for the game-winning shot, but time ran out before the ball left his hand.
New Haven held the edge in rebounding 46 to 39. Stonar led all scorers with 26 points and added nine rebounds. Chaney recorded a double-double with 22 points and 16 boards.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to play Dowling at 3 p.m.
