Mavericks defeat Knights in close contest 65-59

DOBBS FERRY - Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) had a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds en route to a 65-59 victory over Queens College on Saturday. Mercy improves its record to 5-13 overall and 4-7 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).

Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) scored 11 points on 5-of-12 shooting. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) also scored 11 points and grabbed four boards.

Flowers got the offense going when he picked the pocket of guard Khaleef Allicott and finished on the other end to tie the game at six. The Knights (2-15 overall, 0-10 ECC) responded with two three-point buckets by Lawrence Young to take a one point lead (19-18) with 8:06 remaining in the first half.

Queens built up their largest lead of the game (6) on a lay-up by Lamont Lans and a pair of free throws by Allicott. However, Mercy came storming back and tied the game at 26 on a monster jam by Jordan. The Knights led at the half by a score of 28-27.

In the second half the Mavericks offense caught fire again as a Wellington lay-up and another big slam by Jordan gave Mercy a five-point lead, 37-32. With 4:39 remaining in the second half, Mike Liander hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 49, but that would be the Knights' final taste of the lead.

The Mavericks outscored Queens 16-10 in the final 4:39 of the game, which included eight free throws made by Flowers. Queens was able to cut the lead to three on a Lawrence Young three-pointer, but Mercy made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 21 seconds to seal the deal.

Mercy out rebounded the Knights 42 to 40. The Mavericks turned the ball over only 11 times and shot 45.8 percent in the second half. Freshman guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) chipped in with eight points and four assists.

The Mavericks will be back in action at The Masters School on Thursday against New Haven at 8 p.m.
