Mercy College Men's Basketball Falls to Bridgeport 77-63
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 77-63 decision at the hands of visiting Bridgeport on Monday. The Mavericks are now 4-13 overall and 3-7 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Purple Knights improved to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in league action.
Senior guard Paul Flowers (New York, NY) led Mercy with 18 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Flowers hit 8-of-12 from the field and went 2-for-4 at the charity stripe. Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) added 12 points for the Mavericks.
Bridgeport junior forward Teairez Stennis (St. Louis, MO) led all players with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 12 boards to notch a double-double. Freshman guard Marquis Moore (Newark, NJ) chipped in 17 points and senior guard T-Ron Christy (Stratford, CT) contributed 12 points for the Purple Knights.
Bridgeport built an early 10-3 lead, hitting its first three attempts from long distance, with two coming from Moore. The Mavericks cut the deficit to four at 13-9 as senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) netted five points in a 6-0 spurt. Mercy trailed by five with 6:14 left in the first half, but the Purple Knights went on a 10-0 run to build a 39-24 margin, before settling for a 12-point lead at the break, 41-29.
The Mavericks opened the second half with a 10-2 run, getting four points apiece from Marin and Flowers, closing the gap to four again, 43-39 with 16:09 remaining. They stayed within striking distance for the next six minutes and trailed 55-51 when Bridgeport went on a 14-6 spurt, capped by a Moore three-pointer to stretch the lead to 69-57 with 6:44 left in the contest and put it away from there.
Bridgeport shot 50 percent from the field for the game, including 54 percent in the second half, while holding Mercy to 43 percent from the floor. The Purple Knights held a 40-31 advantage on the boards.
Mercy College will celebrate Take a Kid to a Game Day on Saturday, January 26, when the Mavericks host Queens College at Dobbs Ferry High School beginning at 3:00 p.m. Area children age 11 and under are invited to attend this special event and receive a free ticket with the purchase of a full-priced adult ticket. Children will have the opportunity to experience the college game-day atmosphere and some exciting NCAA Division II action.
