No. 25 C.W. Post Tops Mercy College Men's Basketball 77-59

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) led three Mavericks in double-digits with 17 points, but it wasn't enough as the Mercy College men's basketball team fell to No. 25 C.W. Post by a score of 77-59 on Saturday. The Mavericks dropped to 4-12 overall and 3-6 in East Coast Conference (ECC) action, while the Pioneers improved to 14-2 overall and 9-0 in the league.

Wellington connected on 6-of-12 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three-point distance, and hit both of his free throw attempts. Freshman guard Ed Wilson (Bronx, NY) added 12 points and junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) chipped in 10 points for the Mavericks.

Junior guard Jonathan Schmidt (Centereach, NY) led four Pioneers in double-digits with a game-high 22 points. Junior guard Kenny Burkes (Suitland, MD) netted 16 points, junior guard Kevin Spann (West Babylon, NY) added 15 points, and junior guard Wesley Matthews (Valley Stream, NY) pitched in 14 points.

C.W. Post scored the first 11 points of the contest and stretched the margin to 15 at 17-2 with 12:57 left in the first half. A three-pointer from Marin stopped the run and Wellington followed with another three-point basket, cutting the deficit to 17-8.

The Mavericks were able to close the gap to seven at 24-17 on a jumper from Wellington, but the Pioneers scored the next 11 points, getting six from Schmidt, to pull out to a 35-17 advantage. C.W. Post built its lead to as many as 19 before Mercy scored the final five points of the half to trim the deficit to 41-27 at the break.

Wilson and sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) opened the second frame with back-to-back layups as Mercy pulled within 10 at 41-31.  The Pioneers answered with a 7-0 run, capped by a Matthews layup, to stretch the margin to 48-31 with 16:25 to go.  The Mavericks were able to pull within 14 at 57-43 on a layup and a free throw from Wilson, but could pull no closer the rest of the way.

C.W. Post shot 54 percent from the field for the game while holding Mercy to 38.5 percent.  The Pioneers held a 30-29 edge on the boards.

The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, January 23, when they host Bridgeport at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, beginning at 8:00 p.m.  It will be "Make-A-Wish Wednesday", as all fans that make a donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the gate will receive free admission.
