DOBBS FERRY, NY - St. Thomas Aquinas College shot 58 percent from the field and used an 18-0 run midway through the second half to post a 70-47 decision over host Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.  The Mavericks fell to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in ECC play, while the Spartans improved to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) and freshman guard Ed Wilson (Spring Valley, NY) scored 11 points each to lead Mercy. Wilson went 5-of-10 from the field and Wellington connected on 4-of-9, including 3-of-6 beyond the arc. St. Thomas Aquinas senior forward Akeem Comas (Brooklyn, NY) led all players with 19 points on 9-of-13 from the field, hitting his lone three-point attempt on the night. Senior forward Ra Chase (W. Haverstraw, NY) added 12 points and tied for a game-high with nine boards for the Spartans.

Trailing 7-2 early on, Mercy went on a 13-2 run, getting a pair of three-pointers from Wellington to build a 15-9 lead. The Spartans responded with their own 14-3 spurt, capped by a Jelani Winfield (Woodside, NY) layup to regain the edge, 23-18 with 7:14 to go in the half.  An Ed Wilson layup cut the deficit to three at 23-20, but St. Thomas Aquinas outscored the Mavericks 13-2 over the final 5:05 of the period to take a 33-22 advantage into the break.

Mercy stayed within striking distance early in the second frame and pulled within four at 39-35 on a Flowers jumper with 13:32 to go in the contest.  St. Thomas Aquinas then put together its decisive 18-0 run over a span of 7:08, with six points coming from Comas, to pull away to a 57-35 lead.

The Mavericks cut the margin to 57-38 on Wellington's third three-pointer of the night, but would pull no closer the rest of the way.

The Spartans hit 29-of-50 field goal attempts on the night, including 5-of-9 from long range, while holding Mercy to 19-of-51 (37 percent), and out-rebounded Mercy by a 36-18 margin.
