Molloy Rallies Past Mercy College Men's Basketball 67-64

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY - Four Mavericks scored in double-digits, but the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 67-64 decision at Molloy on Wednesday.  Mercy is now 4-10 overall and 3-4 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Lions upped their record to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in league action.

Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) led Mercy with 16 points on 6-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-10 from three-point range, and dished out five assists. Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) netted 15 points, hitting 4-of-7 behind the arc and 5-of-11 overall. Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) added 12 points, and senior forward Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) pitched in 10 points.

Molloy's Vincent Falzone led all players with 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Glenn Martin and Brian Hutchinson each posted double-doubles. Martin netted 17 points and pulled in 12 boards. Hutchinson chipped in 14 points and registered 12 rebounds.

After the Lions built an early 7-2 lead, Mercy scored eight straight points, getting a pair of three-pointers from Wellington and a jumper from Marin to take a three-point lead at 10-7.  Molloy came right back with a 14-3 run to regain the advantage and stretch it to eight, 21-13.

The Lions increased the gap to double-digits at 27-17 on a Martin jumper with 6:18 left in the first half, but the Mavericks responded by closing it out with their own 17-4 outburst, capped off by another Wellington three-pointer, to recapture the lead again at the break, 34-31.

Marin opened the second frame with a three-pointer and Jordan converted a layup, extending the Mavericks' lead to 39-31, but Molloy answered again with another 15-7 spurt to knot the game at 46-46.

Mercy scored the next nine points, regaining momentum and the lead, 55-46, with 10:29 remaining when Molloy began to chip away.  The Lions would tie the contest at 60-60 on another basket by Martin with 2:16 left and went ahead on a Falzone layup on the next possession.

After Falzone hit a pair of free throws to give Molloy a 64-60 lead with a minute to go, Jordan cut the deficit to 64-62 with two free throws of his own, but the Mavericks could pull no closer the rest of the way.

The Mavericks are off for six days before returning to the court on Tuesday, January 15, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College.  Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. at Dobbs Ferry High School.  The Mercy College athletics department will be collecting used cell phones to be recycled, with funds generated from donations to benefit the Sunshine Lady Child Care Center at Mercy's Bronx Campus. All fans that donate a used cell phone will receive free admission.
