Mercy College Men's Basketball Edges Panthers 47-46
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Sophomore guard Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY) scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Mercy College men's basketball team to a 47-46 victory over visiting Adelphi on Saturday. The Mavericks improved to 4-9 overall and evened their record in East Coast Conference (ECC) play at 3-3. The Panthers dropped to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Jordan connected on 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-7 at the free throw line. Junior guard Michael Marin (Flushing, NY) added 12 points for Mercy, including a pair of free throws with four seconds left that put the Mavericks ahead for good. Freshman guard Richard Byrd (Central Islip, NY) led Adelphi with 13 points on 4-of-10 from the field and 4-of-4 at the charity stripe.
The Mavericks opened the game with a 16-5 run over the first 9:38, getting 10 points from Jordan including a highlight reel dunk. Adelphi responded by outscoring Mercy 19-3 over the next 7:03, and used a three-pointer from Byrd to take a 24-19 lead, before going into the break up by a score of 26-21.
Mercy netted the first seven points of the second half, going ahead 28-26 on a Marin three-pointer. The contest saw seven more ties and the lead changed hands four more times until the Mavericks went up 43-41 with 1:39 to go. After empty possessions and turnovers from each squad, Byrd knotted the game at 43-43 with 19 seconds remaining.
The game looked as though it might head for overtime, but Marin was sent to the free throw line and nailed both after he was fouled with four seconds left. Two seconds later, Adelphi turned the ball over and was forced to quickly foul again. Senior guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) sealed it with his two free throws before a last second three-pointer by Adelphi junior guard Alvin Vivican (Brentwood, NY) made the final score 47-46 in favor of Mercy at the buzzer.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, January 9, when they travel to Molloy for another ECC contest beginning at 7:30 p.m.
