Tony Staffiere was appointed head men's basketball coach in June of 2007, and also serves as the department's recruiting coordinator. He was as an assistant coach on Mercy's women's basketball staff for the 2006-07 season, helping to turn that program around with a seven-game improvement.
Prior to joining Mercy, Staffiere served for one year as head women's basketball coach and assistant athletics director at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts. He was also head coach of the women's program, assistant athletics director for fundraising and physical education/health lecturer at Regis College for two years.
Staffiere served as assistant men's basketball coach at Onondaga Community College from 2001-02 and graduate assistant for the women's team at LeMoyne in 2000-01 after beginning his career at Maine Maritime Academy as an assistant men's basketball coach.
The 31-year old native of Veazie, Maine, has been on staff at various basketball camps and clinics, including Five Star Boys Basketball Camps and Five Star Girls Basketball Camps in Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati Boys Basketball Camp.
Staffiere also volunteered at the 2006 NCAA Final Four Convention in Boston and has contributed to Five Star Basketball Publications, Maine Roundball, and was featured in Adrian Wojnarowski's best seller "The Miracle of St. Anthony."
Staffiere is a 1999 graduate of Westfield State College in
Westfield, Massachusetts, where he earned a bachelor of arts in
mass communications. He was named to the Dean's List and finished
his degree with a 3.45 cumulative grade point average as a part of
the Psi Chi Honor Society. In 2002, Staffiere earned his master's
degree in education from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York. He
also earned a Master's of Organizational Leadership at Mercy
College in 2007, and is an adjunct lecturer of physical education
at the College.

Mercy College alumnus Nick Volchok returned as an assistant coach prior to the 2007-08 season. He will be responsible for scouting, academic monitoring, recruiting, player development, and assist with the overall development of the program.
Volchok played two years at Mercy, collecting 533 points and averaging 10.3 points per game during his career. A three-point specialist, he connected on 124 from beyond the arc in 52 games with the blue and white. Volchok also played one year at Cazenovia and one year at Rockland Community College, combining to score over 800 points. During his four years of collegiate basketball he served as a team captain twice and started over 130 consecutive games.
Volchok went on to serve as an assistant coach at Plattsburgh State University for 2004-05, helping the team to an ECAC Tournament appearance. There he was responsible for recruiting, scouting, travel, game day preparation, and tape exchange.
Volchok then played professionally overseas from 2005-2006. He began his career in Germany as a member of Volklingen of the Regonalia league. He moved on to play in the International Basketball League with the Portland Chinooks in 2006, and is currently playing with the Westchester Phantoms of the American Basketball Association.
Volchok graduated from Mercy in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in
journalism and media with a concentration in radio and television
production. He also served as the basketball director and head
supervisor at Rockland County Sports Academy from 2000-2005.

Graduate Assistant Coach |
Steve McGuckin joined the Mercy College men's basketball staff as a graduate assistant coach in the summer of 2007. In this position he is responsible for scouting, film exchange, academic monitoring, recruiting, and assists with the daily operations of the program.
This is McGuckin's first collegiate coaching post after playing four years at Franciscan University in Ohio, helping to build a Division III program. He was one of two four-year starting members in team history, scoring over 800 points during his career and racking up 400 rebounds and 300 assists, while serving as a captain from 2004-06.
Originally from Holmdel, New Jersey, McGuckin also served as an assistant coach with the nationally recognized Central Jersey Hawks AAU program from 2002-07. In his role, he supported, trained and assisted in all aspects of individual and team development. The Hawks made appearances at several regional events, as well as the New Jersey State AAU and National AAU Championships.
McGuckin graduated from Franciscan University in
the spring of 2007 with a bachelor's degree in history. He is
currently pursuing a master's in organizational leadership at
Mercy.
