Grassano Blasts Way to Intramural Softball Home Run Derby Title, Morano On the Mark in Skills Challenge
Mercy College held its Intramural Softball Home Run Derby and Skills Challenge on Friday, April 18. Michael Grassano out-lasted and out-blasted a field of 14 competitors to take the championship in the Home Run Derby and Stephen Morano captured the Throwing Skills Challenge title.
Grassano, batting from his unnatural left side of the batter's box, was one of seven to advance out of the opening round, connecting for three round-trippers in his first 10 swings. Ken Mundy was the first round leader with four, followed by Grassano and Eric Duffy at three, Morano and Drew Brown at two, and Steve Marsar and Mike Ferrante with one.
Grassano assured himself a spot in the championship round by connecting for five home runs in round two, while Mundy and Duffy joined him in the finals with four each. Grassano then ripped five more to seal the crown, while Duffy and Mundy were held to three.
In the Throwing Skills challenge, only three competitors could find the target at home plate from the starting point behind second base. Chris Pannullo and Duffy each connected once, but Morano was on the mark twice, including his final of five attempts to nail down the victory.
