Bill Sullivan will enter his 15th year as Head Baseball Coach in 2008-09 after serving three years as an assistant coach. During his tenure, Mercy baseball teams have recorded double-digit win totals six times with a high of 17 in 2000. From 2000 to 2002, Mercy registered 39 wins.
Sullivan is also an assistant athletics director for internal operations since February of 2006, and served as interim co-director of athletics for 2007-08. In his position he oversees and coordinates all internal activities associated with the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. His responsibilities have included management and scheduling of athletics facilities and team practices, operations and event planning on game days, and inventory control of all department equipment and supplies.
Sullivan began his coaching career after playing for Gene McDonald at La Salle. Through a quality relationship and admiration of the legendary skipper of the Explorers, Sullivan aspired to coach at the collegiate level. He first served as an assistant coach for three years at Mercy under Timmy Kelly, before taking the helm for the 1994-95 campaign.
Sullivan's baseball background reaches beyond the collegiate level as he was a founder and co-owner of Triple Play Baseball Academy in Valley Cottage, NY, where he instructed from 1999-2001. He was also owner and program director of Cooperstown Diamond National Youth Baseball Academy in Warren, NY, from 2001-2005. Sullivan is currently the leading force behind the development of Hardball Baseball Training Center, which currently operates in Florida and New York. He has also been an instructor at The University of Miami and Barry University baseball camps, Diamond Pros, and for the South Orangetown Little League.
Prior to joining the Mercy staff on a full-time basis in 2006, Sullivan was a teacher for 10 years (history, physical education, health, and economics) and assistant dean of students for three years at Preston High School in the Bronx, NY. He also taught physical education and history at Clarkstown North High School for two years, while coaching the junior varsity boys basketball team under one of his childhood idols, Paul Toscano, Sr.
Sullivan was a three-sport athlete at Clarkstown North, participating in baseball, football, and basketball. During his final year he was selected to play in the Exceptional Seniors Game. He began his own collegiate career at Nichols College, where he posted a 5-3 record as a starting pitcher during his freshman season under coach Al Makasion. Sullivan transferred to La Salle, playing three years under McDonald. He was both a reliever and spot starter during his career with the Explorers, facing top Division I programs such as Fordham and Villanova. He also saw action in the infield, and earned the Senior Service Award for athletics and academic performance, and leadership.
Sullivan is a 1991 graduate of La Salle, earning
a bachelors degree in secondary education. He and his wife Tara
have two sons, Billy and John.
