Michael Dern Records Three Hits as Baseball Falls to Felician
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 12, 2012) - Sophomore right fielder Michael Dern (Roslyn, N.Y.) stepped up with three hits in a rare start but the majority of the Mercy College baseball team struggled at the plate and fell to Felician College, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon.
Felician improves to 16-17 while Mercy drops to 6-23.
Felician took hold of the game right off the bat as junior right fielder Joe Petosa (Spotswood, N.J.) smashed a three-run homer in the top of the first inning and cruised from there, adding two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth.
Mercy picked up its lone run in the eighth inning, as an error with the bases loaded allowed freshman left fielder Giovanni Lasalandra (Warwick, N.Y.) to score.
Lasalandra was 1-3 with a walk and a run on the day, while sophomore third baseman Ken Post (Closter, N.J.) went 1-2 with a pair of walks batting cleanup. Sophomore Brian McNamara (Brewster, N.Y.) struck out two batters while allowing just one hit over two innings of relief and senior Chuck DeHart (Staten Island, N.Y.) whiffed two in the ninth. Sophomore Steve Mattina (Staten Island, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss as the starter.
Petosa finished 3-4 with a double, home run, two runs and four RBI and senior centerfielder George Hajjar (Utica, N.Y.) was 2-4 with a walk, two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Freshman Chet Godfrey (Millville, N.J.) picked up the win after allowing six hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings.
