Tyler Savin and Bryan Greig Earn ECC Weekly Honors
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Mercy College baseball pitchers senior Tyler Savin (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y.) were named East Coast Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, in the conference?s Week Five awards.
Savin pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game of Mercy?s doubleheader sweep of Molloy College on Saturday, striking out five and picking up his second win of the season. He lowered his ERA to 3.54 and has allowed just a .220 batting average against while whiffing a team-high 24 batters in 28 innings pitched.
Greig earned his second Rookie of the Week award this season following a brilliant eight-inning effort in the extra-inning win over Molloy on Saturday, in which Greig gave up just five hits while striking out nine batters. He also batted .300 in 10 at-bats as a designated hitter during the week, scoring his first run of the season and knocking in another. His 1.89 ERA is tops among Mercy starters this year and he has struck out 14 hitters over 19 innings while walking only three. He is the only rookie to win the award twice this season.
Head Coach Bob Greiner will lead Savin, Greig and the rest of the Mavericks (4-15 overall, 2-2 in the ECC) against Queens College (5-9, 0-3) today at 3:00 p.m.
