Mercy Alum Back in Major League Baseball with Seattle Mariners
Mercy College baseball alumnus Brian Sweeney is back in Major League
baseball, having been recently recalled by the Seattle
Mariners.
Sweeney, a right handed pitcher from Yonkers, N.Y., last appeared in the majors in 2006, as a member of the San Diego Padres.
For his career, the Archbishop Stepinac High School graduate has appeared in 49 career games, posting a 3-0 record with two saves. His ERA is 3.49, and he has struck out 40 batters in 80.0 innings pitched.
In 2010, he signed with the Mariners as a minor league free agent on April 16, and was assigned to the AAA Tacoma Rainiers. In 15 relief appearances, Sweeney was 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA (8 ER, 28.2 IP) and a 4:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (32 K, 8 BB). The right-hander held opponents to a .192 batting average (20x104). He pitched at least 2.0 innings in 8 of his 15 appearances.
Sweeney spent the last three seasons in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League, playing for the Nippon-Ham Fighters. In three seasons in Japan, Sweeny went 23-21 with a 4.10 ERA (178 ER, 390.2 IP).
