Mavericks Club 13 Hits in 13-7 Victory Over Mt. Saint Vincent
The Mercy baseball team defeated the College of Mt. Saint
Vincent 13-7 in game played on Wednesday afternoon in Dobbs
Ferry. The Mavericks pounded out 13 hits in the victory.
After the Dolphins were retired in order in the first, the Mavericks came out and scored three times in the bottom of the frame. After a walk by Eric Fazio (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees), a single off the bat of Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter’s Boys) and James Diaz-Paulino (Yonkers, N.Y./Lincoln) was hit by a pitch, senior shortstop Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, N.Y./Island Trees) drove in two with a single. The following batter, Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) drove in Diaz-Paulino for the third run. Diaz-Paulino scored three runs in all.
Mercy extended their lead to 4-0 in the second when Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) drew a bases loaded walk. In the bottom of the third, the Mavericks would push their advantage to 8-0 as freshman catcher Matt Buesser (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) ripped a base clearing triple and came in to score on an overthrow at third base. Buesser added a fourth RBI later in the game. The Mavericks’ ninth run came in the fourth when Joe Ganz (Mastic Beach, N.Y./Suffolk C.C.) lifted a sacrifice fly.
The Dolphins pushed a lone run across in the fourth and fifth as sophomore Walter Kowalczyk (Valhalla, N.Y./Briarcliff) would allow only those blemishes in going five innings for the win. Mt. Saint Vincent scored twice more in the sixth bringing the score to 9-4 for Mercy. In the bottom of the sixth, Ganz pushed a run across with an RBI walk, as four of the first five batters of the frame all drew bases on balls. Buesser ripped an RBI single for the second run of the inning and extended the score to 11-4 Mavericks.
After Mt. Saint Vincent scored twice in the seventh to make the score 11-6, Mercy tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth as freshman Andrew Bock (Malverne, N.Y./Valley Stream North) earned a bases loaded walk and Walsh laced a RBI single. The final was 13-7.
With the win, Mercy’s record sits at 10-18 overall (5-10 ECC) while Mt. Saint Vincent is 13-15 (6-4 Skyline). The Mavericks return to East Coast Conference action on Thursday, April 14 as they travel to Flushing, N.Y. to face Queens College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
