No. 8 Barry Powers Past Mavericks in Non-Conference

MIAMI SHORES, FL - The Mercy College baseball team fell on Tuesday by a score of 16-0 at Barry University, currently ranked No. 8 in the nation. The Mavericks are now 5-4 on the year, while the Bucs improved to 24-3.
Barry collected 18 hits on the day, including four home runs. Yudelmis Hernandez got things going with a solo home run in the second inning. The Bucs then exploded for 12 runs in the third inning with Yan Gomes delivering a grand slam for the big blow.

The Mercy College bullpen held the Barry offense in check from there, allowing a single run in the fifth and two in the seventh. Sophomore left-hander Keith Kreig (City Island, NY) highlighted the relief effort with three strong innings, yielding one run on four hits and striking out two. Junior right-hander Frank DeRosa (West Harrison, NY) also tossed a scoreless seventh frame.
Junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) had a double in two at-bats and junior Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) went 1-for-3 for Mercy.
Gomes finished the night 2-for-2 with four runs batted in for the Bucs. Hernandez knocked in three runs, going 3-for-4. Barry has now won 16 of its last 17 games.
At 5-4, the Mavericks are off to their best start after nine games since the 1987 season. They will return north to open up East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Concordia beginning at Noon.
