DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) was named East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Player of the Week on Monday.
Walsh, a 5-foot-10 outfielder/pitcher got off to a hot start at the plate in the Mavericks' first four games of the season, going 7-for-16 (.438). He posted an .813 slugging percentage, collecting four singles, a double, a triple, and his first collegiate home run to knock in six runs and scored five more. Walsh also picked up four walks and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
He went 3-for-4 with an RBI in the season opening win versus Bloomfield and followed up later in the day with a 2-for-4 (double, home run) performance in a win over Felician, scoring three runs. Against Briarcliffe he knocked in three runs, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a stolen base.
Walsh also tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out three batters around a walk to close out the Mavericks' win over Briarcliffe. In the process, he helped Mercy College to its first 3-0 start ever and its best four-game start since 1985 at 3-1.
