Mercy College Baseball Suffers First Defeat, 6-3 to Felician

Kenny Tyson

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -  The Mercy College baseball team rallied from behind for a fourth straight game, but this time fell short, 6-3 to Felician late on Saturday night at The Ripken Experience. The Mavericks are off to a 3-1 start for the first time since the 1985 campaign.

Mercy College got on the scoreboard first with a run in the third inning on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY). The lead was short lived though as the Golden Falcons struck for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 edge.

Felician tacked on four runs in the seventh to stretch the gap to 6-1.  The Mavericks didn't go away quietly, putting together a rally in the top half of the ninth. They took advantage of a pair of Felician errors and got base hits from Mike Grassano (Valley Stream, NY), Mike Gianzero (Highland Mills, NY), and Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) to push across two runs, but that would be as close as they could get.

Southpaw Kenny Tyson (Miami, FL) went the first six innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out eight batters in his Mercy College debut.

The Mavericks' contest scheduled for Sunday versus seventh-ranked West Chester University was canceled due to inclement weather.
