Mavericks Battle Back for Third Straight Win, 12-6 versus Briarcliffe

Mike Ferrante

MYRTLE BEACH, SC -  The Mercy College baseball team came from behind for a third straight game to post a 12-6 win over Briarcliffe at The Ripken Experience on Saturday. The Mavericks remain undefeated at 3-0 to start the season. The contest was delayed two hours due to rain.

The Mavericks took a 4-0 lead after two innings, but Briarcliffe scored three in the fourth and three more in the fifth to go ahead 6-4. Mercy got one back in the bottom of the sixth and put up four more in the seventh to regain a 9-6 lead.

Sophomore Mike Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) drove in the go ahead run and sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) also had a big hit in the inning.  The Mavericks tacked on three more runs in the eighth to put it away.

Sophomore Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) worked 3 1/3 innings of relief to notch his first win of the season. He struck out three and allowed one earned run on three hits.  Walsh came on in the ninth to close it out. After he fanned the leadoff man, Walsh walked the next batter, but struck out the next two.

The Mavericks will take on Felician at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night.
