Mavericks Split ECC Baseball Doubleheader with Queens
FLUSHING, NY - The
Mercy College baseball team split an East Coast Conference (ECC)
doubleheader with Queens to finish up the regular season, winning
game one 10-8 and dropping the finale 4-3 on Saturday.
In game one the Mavericks (9-26, 3-21 ECC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead
with one run in the first inning and three more in the third.
However, Queens (8-22, 7-17 ECC) came right back with five runs in
the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 lead.
The Blue & White responded with two runs in the fifth and four
more runs in the sixth to take a 10-5 lead. Sophomore
Stephen Marsar
(Seaford,
NY) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings
coming out of the bullpen for the Mavericks.
Junior Mike Grassano (Valley
Stream,
NY) went 3-for-4 with six RBI and
a double. Junior Julio Torres
(Harlingen,
TX) went 3-for-5 with three runs
scored and two stolen bases. Sophomore Mike Ferrante
(Long Beach,
NY) went 2-for-5 with two RBI,
three runs scored and two stolen bases, while sophomore
Matt Walsh (Staten
Island,
NY) added two hits, one RBI and a
run scored.
In game two Mercy scored twice in the third inning and once more in
fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Queens responded with one run in the
bottom of the fifth and tallied three more in the sixth to take a
4-3 lead.
Freshman Charles DeHart (Staten
Island,
NY) made his first collegiate
start on the hill and pitched 4.1 innings allowing one run and
striking out four.
Freshman Mike Gianzero (Highland
Mills, NY), Torres and Walsh all had two hits.
Walsh led the team and conference in batting with a .395 average.
He also led the team in runs scored with 22, hits with 45, doubles
with nine and triples with two. Grassano had a team-best five home
runs and 26 RBI. Freshman Ray Thaisz
(Staten Island,
NY) led the Mercy pitching staff
with three wins and a 3.38 ERA.
