Queens Tops Mercy College Baseball 10-3
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College baseball team was defeated by East Coast Conference
(ECC) opponent Queens by a score of 10-3 on Friday.
Queens (7-21, 6-16 ECC) struck for two runs in the second inning,
highlighted by an RBI double by junior Aniel Napolitano
(Ozone Park,
NY).
In the fifth inning the Knights extended their lead by adding four
runs. Queens registered RBI singles by sophomore Matt Ortiz
(Cambria Heights, NY), junior Jared Stoler
(Plainview, NY) and junior Noel Gerena (Central
Islip, NY) to take a 6-0 lead.
The Mavericks (8-25, 2-20 ECC) got a run back in the bottom of the
sixth inning when junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream,
NY) roped an RBI double to left centerfield to bring
sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) around to
score from first base.
Queens added a run in the top of the seventh, but Mercy scored
twice in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 7-3. Walsh
began the inning with a single and was followed by Dern who reached
on an error. Junior Mike Grassano (Valley
Stream,
NY) hit a frozen rope to left
field which went past the left fielder to bring home two runs.
The Knights scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a
10-3 lead.
Sophomore pitcher Brian Friedman
(Brooklyn,
NY) went the distance for the
Knights, allowing one earned run with nine strikeouts.
Walsh, Dern and senior Ken Mundy (Valley
Stream,
NY) all had two hits.
In a ceremony taking place before the game, the Mercy College
Athletics Department honored the baseball team's four graduating
seniors: Mundy, Mat Anzivino
(Miami,
FL), Luis Bido
(Bronx,
NY) and Matt Moreno
(Harrison,
NY).
The Mavericks will finish up their regular season schedule with a
doubleheader at Queens on Saturday, May 2.
