Mavericks Edged by Spartans 4-2 in ECC Baseball

Kenny Tyson

DOBBS FERRY, NY - Junior southpaw Kenny Tyson (Miami, FL) tossed his fourth consecutive complete game, but was out-dueled by four St. Thomas Aquinas College pitchers as the Spartans defeated Mercy College 4-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball action on Friday.

Tyson scattered nine hits and struck out five batters in nine innings of work. Sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Mavericks. Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) and junior Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX) added two hits each.

St. Thomas Aquinas (16-19, 9-8 ECC) struck for a run in the top of the first. Vincent Malzahn's (Sparrowbush, NY) ground out knocked in Nick Barbalato (Mahopac, NY) from third base with one out. Tyson worked out of it with a strikeout to end the inning.

The Mavericks (8-18, 2-13 ECC) got the run right back in the bottom of the first to knot the game at 1-1. Ferrante led off with a walk and moved to third when Torres beat out a bunt and the throw got away from first on the play. Walsh followed with a double to right center to plate Torres. Spartan starter Scott Sadowski (Bethpage, NY) worked out of the jam without further damage.

Matt Walsh

The Spartans came right back with a pair of runs in the second frame on RBI singles from Matt Marotta (Suffern, NY) and Joseph Antenucci (Emerson, NJ) to regain the lead at 3-1.

Mercy cut the deficit to one at 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a run-scoring single off the bat of junior Mike Grassano (Valley Stream, NY), but the Mavericks' offense would be held scoreless over the final six innings.

St. Thomas Aquinas added an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Dan Stroud (Central Nyack, NY) and Dave Schwartz (Nanuet, NY) pitched a scoreless ninth, stranding a pair of Mavericks on the bases to nail down the save.

Sadowski went the first five innings for the victory, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out two. Matt Matkovich (Suffern, NY) gave St. Thomas Aquinas 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Jared Randazzo (Suffern, NY) added 1 1/3 scoreless.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, April 25, when they host Molloy at 1 p.m. in an ECC doubleheader.
