DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 14-6 to visiting Dowling College in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game on Thursday. The Mavericks are now 8-17 overall and 2-12 in ECC action, while the Golden Lions improved to 20-10 overall and 11-6 in the conference.
Sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles for Mercy College. Junior Mike Grassano (Valley Stream, NY) was 2-for-4, belting his team-leading fifth home run of the season, and junior Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX) added a 2-for-5 performance. Junior Vinnie Tesoriero (Glenhead, NY) also connected for the first home run of his collegiate career.
The Golden Lions collected 21 hits on the day and struck quickly, posting a pair of runs in the first inning, one in the second and two more in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY) highlighted the scoring with a two-run home run in the first frame.
The Mavericks got two runs in the third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Grassano delivered a sacrifice fly for the first run and Torres scored from third on a balk.

Dowling responded with a run in the fourth inning and got another back in the fifth frame on a Ralph Tufano (Eltingville, NY) RBI double.
Mercy rallied in the sixth, pushing across three runs to pull within two at 7-5. Grassano led off with his blast over the left centerfield fence. Junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) doubled with one out and two batters later, Tesoriero connected for his shot over the left field fence.
Dowling would answer again, this time sending 11 batters to the plate to score seven runs and stretch the lead to 14-5. The big blow was a bases loaded triple off the bat of David Wendt (Methuen, MA).
The Mavericks managed a run in the seventh on an infield hit up the middle by Kenny Tyson (Miami, FL) that scored Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY). That would be as close as Mercy could pull though as the Dowling bullpen closed it out.
The Mavericks will return to action on Friday, April 24, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 p.m.
