BROOKVILLE, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a pair of East Coast Conference (ECC) games at C.W. Post on Saturday. The Pioneers took game one by a score of 6-1 and came out on top of a 1-0 pitchers' duel in game two.
C.W. Post (12-23, 9-5 ECC) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the opener. Anthony Montesano (Bellmore, NY) plated both runs with a single to left center.
Mercy (8-16, 2-11) got an unearned run in the seventh inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) drove in the run on a fielder's choice with sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) on third.
The Pioneers got the run right back in the bottom of the seventh to build a 3-1 lead. Bruce Testa (Glen Cove, NY) scored the run on a passed ball after he doubled to center and moved to third on a balk.
C.W. Post tacked on three more runs in the eighth to pull away. Two came on a double from Montesano and Testa added a sacrifice fly.
That was all Pioneers starter Pete Budkevics (Deer Park, NY) would need as he finished off a complete game effort in which he allowed only four hits, walked two and struck out five.
The second game went scoreless for the first five frames as Mercy's junior left-hander Kenny Tyson (Miami, FL) and C.W. Post's Brian Saldana (Deer Park, NY) matched zeros.

The Pioneers managed to push across the game's only run in the sixth. Bryan Bonin (Commack, NY) drew a walk with one out and then stole second base. After a flyout, Brian Anderson (Nesconset, NY) singled to left center and Bonin barely beat the throw to the plate for what would be the winning run.
Saldana set the Mavericks down in order in the seventh to finish off his complete game in which he allowed just two hits and struck out three.
Tyson went the distance for Mercy, also yielding only a pair of singles and fanning two batters.
Junior Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX) had a pair of hits on the day for the Mavericks. Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) had a base hit in the opener, but did not hit safely in game two, stopping his hitting streak at a season-best 14 straight.
The Mavericks will return to action on Monday, April 20, when they host St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:30 p.m. in another ECC contest.
