DOBBS FERRY, NY - Freshman right-hander Walter Kowalczyk (Valhalla, NY) earned his first win as the Mercy College baseball team defeated visiting Mt. St. Vincent College by a score of 6-4 in non-conference play on Thursday. The Mavericks are now 8-13 on the year, while Mt. St. Vincent dropped to 14-10 overall.
Mt. St. Vincent got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from Joe Blackford (Stewartsville, NJ). The Dolphins added a pair of runs in the third frame when Blackford belted a two run home run over the right field fence, stretching the margin to 3-0. Kowalczyk came on in relief and got the next three batters, two by strikeout, to end the inning.

The Mavericks got an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) singled with a runner on third.
Senior Mat Anzivino (Miami, FL) and junior Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief with Anzivino striking out two batters and Merslich fanning all three he faced. Freshman Ray Thaisz (Staten Island, NY) then hurled a scoreless ninth with Pannullo making a dramatic diving catch in deep right centerfield to end the game.
Ferrante went 2-for-5 on the day, stretching his hitting streak to 12 consecutive games. Freshman Charles DeHart (Staten Island, NY) added a 2-for-3 day for the Mavericks. Kowalczyk allowed one earned run in three innings of work, yielding just two hits and striking out three batters.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday, April 17, when they host C.W. Post at Noon in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game that was moved up from its original scheduled date of Sunday, April 19.
