Mercy College Baseball Defeated by Bridgeport 8-5

Matt Walsh

BRIDGEPORT, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 8-5 to host University of Bridgeport on Wednesday at Harbor Yard. The Mavericks are now 7-13 overall and 2-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Purple Knights improved to 8-11 overall and 6-7 in the ECC.

Sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in and his 10th stolen base of the season. Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) had a single that extended his hitting streak to 11 straight. Four other Mavericks had base hits on the day.

Ferrante led off the top of the first with a single to left field and moved over on a sacrifice bunt by junior Vinnie Tesoriero (Glenhead, NY). Walsh followed with a single, pushing Ferrante to third and then stole second base. Senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) plated Ferrante with a ground out for the Mavericks' first run.

After junior Michael Grassano (Valley Stream, NY) reached on a catcher's interference, junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) knocked in Walsh with a single and senior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) drove in Grassano with another base hit to give Mercy a 3-0 lead.

Bridgeport answered with four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-3 lead that it would not relinquish. Peter Barrows drew a bases loaded walk to force in the first run and Kevin Clements knocked in the second run with a sacrifice fly. Cody Quinn completed the scoring with a two-run single.

The Purple Knights added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-3.

Mercy put together a rally in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs on three hits and taking advantage of an outfield error. Tesoriero drove in a run with a two-out single and Walsh delivered another run with his second hit of the day.

The Mavericks would pull no closer as Bridgeport reliever Matt Bartolomei came in and set down the next seven batters in order over the final 2 1/3 innings to shut the door and earn the save.

Mercy will return to action on Thursday, April 16 when it hosts Mt. St. Vincent at 3:30 p.m. in a non-conference contest.
