DOBBS FERRY, NY - Senior right-hander Mat Anzivino (Miami, FL) gave the Mercy College baseball team a strong outing on the mound, but the Mavericks fell by a score of 3-1 to visiting Dowling College on Tuesday. Mercy College is now 7-12 overall and 2-7 in the East Coast Conference (ECC). The Golden Lions improved to 17-10 overall and 8-6 in league play.
The Mavericks pushed across a run in the bottom of the first to build an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) led off with a base hit to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight and moved to second on an error. Two batters later, sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) singled and senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) followed with an RBI ground out.
That would be all Mercy would get as Dowling starter Marc Rutledge (Ridge, NY) scattered just six hits the rest of the way and didn't allow another Maverick past first base.
His offense gave him all he would need in the top of the fourth, scoring all three of its runs on three hits, a walk and taking advantage of a misplayed line drive in the outfield. Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY) drove in two of the runs.
Rutledge went the distance for Dowling, yielding eight hits in the game, one earned run and struck out eight without allowing a walk.
Anzivino went 7 2/3 innings for Mercy, giving up two earned runs and striking out six batters. Sophomore Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) gave the Mavericks 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Walsh finished 2-for-4 on the day, raising his average to an even .400 for the year.
The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, April 15, when they travel to Bridgeport for another ECC tilt beginning at 3:00 p.m.
