Golden Lions Take Mercy College Baseball 3-0

Chris Pannullo

BROOKHAVEN, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-0 decision to host Dowling College in East Coast Conference (ECC) play on Monday. The Mavericks are now 7-11 overall and 2-6 in ECC action, while the Golden Lions improved to 16-10 overall and 7-6 in the conference.

Sophomore Gabriel Duran (Brooklyn, NY) limited the Mavericks to only two hits on the day, walked three batters and struck out 11 as he improved to 6-1 on the year.

Mercy College junior starter Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) gave the Blue & White another solid outing, yielding three runs on nine hits in six-plus innings of work. Freshman Billy Dring (Mahopac, NY) threw one scoreless inning in relief.

The Mavericks got their first hit in the second inning, a one-out double off the bat of senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY), but Duran got the next two batters to end the threat.

Dowling broke through in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs on three hits. Daniel Pembroke (Wading River, NY) drove in the first run with a single and Matthew Monastero (Ridge, NY) plated the second on a ground out with a runner on third.

The Golden Lions added another run in the fifth frame when Pembroke walked with the bases loaded, stretching the lead to 3-0.

That was all Duran would need as the only other hit he allowed was a single by sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) in the sixth. It stretched Ferrante's hitting streak to nine straight games, but Duran set down the final 10 batters in order to finish it off.

The Mavericks and Golden Lions will meet for the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday, April 14 at Mercy College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
