UMass Lowell Tops Mercy College Baseball 15-6

LOWELL, MA - Senior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) was 1-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases, but the Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 15-6 at UMass-Lowell on Wednesday.
The Mavericks (7-9) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The first four batters all reached base on singles. Walsh and Mundy each had run-scoring hits and junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) drove in another on a fielder's choice.
The lead was brief as the River Hawks (16-7) scored 15 straight runs over the next three innings. They scored three in the first frame, posting three hits and taking advantage of a pair of walks and an error.
UMass Lowell seized a 7-3 lead in the second inning with four more runs. Tim Keene (Berlin, NH), Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) and J.T. Leary (Newburyport, MA) each knocked in runs with consecutive hits, and another run scored on a double steal.

The River Hawks put the game out of reach with eight runs in the third, sending 13 men to the plate and collecting seven hits.
The Mavericks got one run in the sixth without a hit as they took advantage of a walk and two River Hawks errors. Mercy finished its scoring with two runs in the seventh inning. Walsh drove in one on a fielder's choice and then scored on a successful double steal with senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) swiping second base on the back end.
Juniors Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) and Frank DeRosa (West Harrison, NY) each tossed scoreless innings of relief and freshman Walter Kowalczyk (Valhalla, NY) posted three scoreless frames without allowing a hit for Mercy.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back on Thursday, April 9, when they host Adelphi in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game beginning at 3:30 p.m.
