ORANGEBURG, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 6-5 in 13 innings at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday. The contest went four hours and 15 minutes. The Mavericks are now 7-8 overall and 2-4 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Spartans improved to 8-16 overall and 2-6 in the conference.

Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) went 3-for-7 on the day for Mercy, driving in three runs. Junior Mike Grassano (Valley Stream, NY), freshman Charles DeHart (Staten Island, NY) and junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) added two hits each.

St. Thomas Aquinas built an early 4-0 lead, scoring two runs in the second inning and two more in the third. The Mavericks struck for three runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to 4-3. Senior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) started the scoring with an RBI double, and DeHart and Ferrante followed with RBI singles.

Mercy got two more in the fifth on another base hit from Ferrante to take a 5-4 lead, but the Spartans answered with a run on a Vincent Malzahn double in the bottom of the inning to tie the contest at 5-5.

The two teams would remain deadlocked as each bullpen put up zeros for the next seven and a half innings. The Spartans finally broke through in the bottom of the 13th. They loaded the bases with no outs on a hit batter, a walk, and a single. Matt Smith then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, pushing across Kevin Connors with the winning run from third base.

Three Mercy relievers worked 10 innings, allowing just two runs on eight hits. Senior Mat Anzivino (Miami, FL) gave the Mavericks 5 2/3 innings, yielding one run on only two hits. Sophomore Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) went 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Freshman Ray Thaisz (Staten Island, NY) surrendered just the one run in the 13th frame as he went 2 2/3 innings.

The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, April 8, when they travel to UMass-Lowell, currently ranked No. 1 in the East Region. Fans can follow the game with Live Stats via the Internet at www.goriverhawks.com.
