ORANGEBURG, NY - Junior southpaw Kenny Tyson (Miami, FL) tossed a complete game, striking out nine batters and sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) drove in the only run to give the Mercy College baseball team a 1-0 win over host St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday. With the victory, the Mavericks improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. The Spartans fall to 6-14 overall and 0-4 in league action.
Freshman third baseman Charles DeHart (Staten Island, NY) made his first collegiate hit a big one for the Mavericks, leading off the top of the third inning with a single. Junior Julio Torres (Harlingen, TX) moved him over with a sacrifice bunt and Ferrante followed with a single to plate DeHart.

That would be all Tyson would need as he scattered seven hits and walked only one over his nine innings. The Spartans' biggest threat came in the bottom of the third when Fernando Peralta (Pine Bush, NY) led off with a double and stole third base. Tyson was unfazed, fanning the next two batters and getting a ground out to end the inning.
St. Thomas Aquinas put a pair of runners on in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, but Tyson worked out of each jam. Kevin Ryan (Levittown, NY) led of the last of the ninth with a base hit, but again the Mavericks' left-hander got the next three batters to close out his first win with the Blue & White.
The Mavericks had four hits on the day. Along with Ferrante and DeHart, sophomore Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) and senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) also had singles.
At 7-6 on the year, Mercy is off to the program's best start since the 1987 squad went 7-6 over its first 13 games. The Mavericks return to action on Thursday, April 2 with another ECC tilt at Adelphi beginning at 3:30 p.m.
