Mavericks Rally but Fall Short to Concordia 11-8 in 13 innings
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The
Mercy College baseball team rallied from eight runs down, but
Concordia came back to defeat the Mavericks in 13 innings by a
score of 11-8 on Monday in East Coast Conference (ECC) action.
The Clippers (12-14-1, 5-2 ECC) got on the board in the second
inning on RBI singles by sophomore Bill O'Connell (Dobbs
Ferry, NY) and senior Michael Pompa (Carmel,
NY). Concordia added one in the third, two in the fourth
and three more in fifth to take an 8-0 lead.
The Mavericks' (6-6, 1-2 ECC) bats came alive in the sixth inning
with five runs. Sophomore Michael Ferrante (Long Beach,
NY) led off with a walk, sophomore Graig
Lauricella (Massapequa, NY) singled and then sophomore
Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) walked to load the
bases.
Senior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) knocked in
Ferrante and then junior Marc Dern (Valley Stream,
NY) drove in a run on a fielder's choice. Junior
Vincent Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) hit a sharp
ground ball which the second baseman mishandled, leading to two
more runs. The Mavericks capped off the inning with an RBI single
by senior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) to cut the
deficit to 8-5.

In the seventh inning the Mavericks
built a two-out rally after Lauricella and Walsh reached base.
Pannullo tripled to right field to bring home two runs and then
Pannullo tied the game up by scoring on a wild pitch to knot the
score at eight.
Neither team scored again until the 13th inning, when the Clippers
put up three runs.
There were 19 runs, 31 hits, nine errors in the longest game of the
season for the Mavericks.
Lauricella went 3-for-6 with two runs scored. Walsh added three
hits and scored once. Pannullo drove in three runs and scored
twice.
Sophomore Peter Denyssenko (Larchmont, NY) picked
up the win in relief with five scoreless innings. Sophomores
Stephen Marsar (Seaford, NY), Keith
Kreig (City Island, NY) and freshman Billy Dring
(Mahopac, NY) combined to strike out seven batters in
6.1 innings.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, March 31 when they
travel to play St. Thomas Aquinas at 3:30 p.m.
