Mercy Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Concordia
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team split a doubleheader on Senior Day with Concordia on Saturday, dropping the first game 8-1 and winning the second 5-2. The Mavericks' record is now 11-31-1 overall and 7-18-1 within in the East Coast Conference (ECC).
In game one, the Clippers (13-29, 8-18 ECC) jumped out first with a solo home run from first baseman Tom Bordanaro. The Mavericks responded with a two-out rally to tie up the score when junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) laced a double to right field and then senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked him in with a single to center field.
In the second inning, Concordia took the lead on an RBI groundout and then a run-scoring single by Kenny Espinal.
The Clippers extended its lead in the fourth with three runs in the frame. Espinal again had the big hit with an RBI double down the left field line. Mike Sciacchitano followed with a single to right field to plate the final run of the inning to go up 6-1.
Concordia starting pitcher Zack Staniewicz tossed a complete game, allowing nine hits and one run.

Matt Walsh |
Mercy started game two with a three-run inning to give starting pitcher freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) some runs to work with. Freshman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY) walked to lead off the game and freshman Mike Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) singled to set the table for Pannullo who moved the runners over on a groundout. Summer hit the first of his three doubles on the day, and knocked in two runs. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) capped off the scoring with an RBI single to bring Summer home.
In the third inning, Concordia got on the board with two runs, but Mercy got one back in the bottom of the inning. Summer doubled in Pannullo to go up 4-2.
The Mavericks added one more run in the fourth inning when Lauricella singled freshman Chris Sanchez (Spring Valley, NY) home.
The Clippers could do little against Walsh as he completed the game, allowing only three hits, two runs and struck out five.
Summer went 3-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Ross went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lauricella had one hit, one run batted in and a run scored.
The Mavericks will close out its season on Sunday at Concordia at 1:00 p.m.
