Mavericks Fall to Queens 10-5
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference (ECC) game to Queens College on Wednesday by a score of 10-5. The Mavericks' record falls to 10-25 overall and 6-13 in the conference.
Freshman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) had one hit and two runs driven in. Sophomore Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored.
The Knights (10-20, 8-12) put up five runs in the first to force the Mavericks to play from behind. Justin McKay started the scoring with an RBI single. The big hit of the inning was a two-run single by Carlos Suarez. In the bottom of the inning, Tesoriero walked and stole second. Lauricella lofted a single over the shortstop's head to get the Mavericks on the board.
In the second inning, the Mavericks pushed across another run when sophomore Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) blasted a double off the left field fence to plate junior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY).
With the score 6-2 in the fifth, the Mavericks rallied for three runs to cut the deficit to one. Tesoriero and Lauricella started the inning with singles. Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) connected for an RBI single and then Pannullo roped a triple to center field to bring home two runs.
However, Queens added two runs in the top of the sixth on a Jovan Santos RBI single and a sacrifice fly by McKay to put the Knights up 8-5. The Knights added two more runs in the ninth and reliever Brian Honeyman closed out to notch the save.
The Mavericks will be back in action at home on Thursday, April 24 when they take on C.W. Post at 3:30 p.m.
