Mercy's Steve Summer Caps Off Career with ECC Player of the Week Honors
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Mercy College senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow HS) put together one of his best performances over the final five games of his collegiate career to earn East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Player of the Week honors, it was announced on Monday.
A right-handed first baseman, Summer went 9-for-18 for a .500 batting average with three doubles, two home runs and eight runs batted in. He posted a 1.000 slugging percentage, collecting 18 total bases in 18 at bats, reached base at a .526 clip, and handled all 49 chances in the field without an error. He hit safely in all five games with three multi-hit performances, and drove in at least one run in four of five outings.
In a non-conference game vs. Briarcliffe, Summer went 1-for-2 with his first home run of the season. He then went 2-for-4 with two singles and a walk in a 6-6 tie with Queens. Summer followed by combining to go 6-for-12 in a three game series with Concordia to close it out. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the opener before going 3-for-3 with three doubles and three RBI in a 5-2 win. He finished it off on Sunday with a 2-for-5 performance at Concordia, belting a three run home run.
Summer finished the year with a .266 batting average and led the Mavericks with 28 runs batted in, 12 doubles and 14 extra base hits. He also ranked second on the squad with 38 total hits and posted a .981 fielding percentage. During his three-year career at Mercy, Summer racked up 130 hits, 36 doubles, seven home runs and 74 runs batted in.
