Mavericks Fall to Concordia 7-6 in 12 Innings

BRONXVILLE, NY -  Seniors Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) and Steve Summer (E. Meadow, NY) each belted home runs in their final game for the Mercy College baseball team, but the Mavericks fell short at Concordia, 7-6 in 12 innings.  Mercy finishes the year at 11-32-1 overall and 7-19-1 in the East Coast Conference (ECC).

Concordia (14-29, 9-18 ECC) built a 3-0 lead by scoring a run in the second on a solo home run from T.J. Walsh and two more in the third on a sacrifice fly from Peter Dempsey and an RBI triple from Tom Bordanaro.

The Mavericks pulled even in the fourth when Summer connected for a three run home run over the left centerfield fence.

Mercy then went ahead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Ross, but the Clippers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead at 6-4.

The Mavericks chipped away with a run in the eighth on Ross's solo home run and knotted the contest at 6-6 in the ninth when sophomore Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY) plated freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) from second with a base hit up the middle.

Junior southpaw Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) came on in relief in the bottom of the ninth and gave Mercy three scoreless innings to hold Concordia at bay.

The Clippers finally broke through in the bottom of the 12th when Donnie Roth drew a bases load walk to push across the deciding run.

Summer finished the day 2-for-5 with his three runs batted in and Ross went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.  Freshman Graig Lauricella (N. Massapequa, NY) was 3-for-5, while junior Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) and Walsh each added two hits for the Mavericks.

Mercy closes out the year with an eight-win improvement over last season.  The Mavericks are slated to return 25 letterwinners for 2009.
