Mercy Baseball Defeated by Briarcliffe 13-3

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team fell by a score of 13-3 to visiting Briarcliffe in a non-conference game on Wednesday. The Mavericks are now 10-30 overall.

Senior Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) led the Mercy offense by going 2-for-4 with a single and a double. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) belted a solo home run and senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) had an RBI single.

The Mavericks struck for a run in the second inning as Tosado scored from third on an attempted steal of second by freshman Chris Sanchez (Spring Valley, NY). Briarcliffe answered with a run in the third, taking advantage of an infield error with two outs.

Briarcliffe then added two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to open up a 6-1 lead. Mercy got one back in the sixth on Summer's opposite field round tripper, his second of the season, but Briarcliffe responded with two more in the seventh, stretching the margin to 8-2.

Ross made it 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh, plating Tosado with a single to centerfield, but Briarcliffe tacked on four runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth to put it away.

Reggie Smith led the Briarcliffe offense, going 5-for-7, including a pair of triples, and three runs batted in. Mike Rocco went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in.

The Mavericks will resume East Coast Conference play on Friday with a single game at Queens, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
