Spartans Edge Mavericks in the Ninth, 3-2

PLEASANTVILLE, NY -  Chris Zapata's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave host St. Thomas Aquinas College a 3-2 victory over Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball action on Sunday.  The Mavericks are now 10-29 overall and 6-17 in ECC play.

St. Thomas Aquinas (25-20, 15-8 ECC) broke a scoreless tie with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Dan McDermott and Kevin Connors each had RBI singles.

Mercy responded by scoring twice in the top of the fourth without a hit. After Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) was hit by a pitch with one out, Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) walked and Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) was also hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Pannullo then scored on a fielder's choice and Summer came home on an infield error.

The two teams matched zeros on the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth.  Vincent Malzahn led off with a single and McDermott followed with another base hit.  Mercy intentionally walked Connors who was 4-for-4 on the day to load the bases and Zapata delivered a single to plate Malzahn with the game-winner.

Junior right-hander Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) went the distance for Mercy. He worked around trouble to strand 16 Spartans on base, striking out seven along the way.

Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY), Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY), Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, NY), and Pannullo each had hits for the Mavericks.

Mercy will return to action on Tuesday, April 29, with another non-conference game at Queens College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
