Mercy Baseball Drops Two to St. Thomas Aquinas
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell in both ends of an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader to visiting St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday. The Spartans rallied from behind for a 3-2 win in the opener and posted an 8-0 decision in game two.
Mercy (10-28, 6-16 ECC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) delivered an RBI double and sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) plated the second run with a single.
Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) held St. Thomas Aquinas scoreless until the fifth frame when John Mazzello drew a bases loaded walk with one out, and the Spartans took advantage of an error to tie the game in the sixth.
St. Thomas Aquinas went ahead 3-2 in the eighth as Dan McDermott stole second and Fernando Peralta took home on the play. The Spartans' bullpen then closed it out with Jon Della Monica earning the save with a perfect ninth.

In game two, St. Thomas Aquinas struck first, scoring twice in the second inning, getting an RBI single from Joe Giustino and scoring the other run on a balk.
The Spartans added three runs in the fifth, including two on a home run by McDermott, to stretch the lead to 5-0. They tacked on three more in the ninth to put it away.
Walsh went the distance in the opener for the Mavericks, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits while striking out eight. Dern went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game.
Mike Aviles tossed a seven-inning complete game for the Spartans in the second contest, striking out eight and yielding just three hits. Freshman Graig Lauricella (North Massapequa, NY) went 2-for-3 for Mercy.
The Mavericks and Spartans will close out their series on Sunday, April 27, with St. Thomas Aquinas as the host. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
