Mercy Baseball Clipped by Panthers, 2-1
GARDEN CITY, NY - Adelphi University scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to post a 2-1 decision over Mercy College in East Coast Conference (ECC) baseball play on Sunday. The Mavericks are now 10-23 overall and 6-12 in the ECC. The Panthers improved to 17-20 overall and 9-10 in the league.
The game went scoreless for the first four and a half innings before Adelphi struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth on a lead off home run from Chris Weidlein.
The Mavericks responded in the sixth with a run to knot the game at 1-1. Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) led off with a walk and moved to third on back-to-back ground outs. After senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) was hit by a pitch, sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) plated Walsh with an infield hit.
The contest remained tied until the eighth when Robert Paccione reached on a bunt base hit with one out and moved all the way to third on a throwing error with one out. Ryan Boelsen followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead.

Adelphi reliever Mike McLaskey, who entered the game in the seventh, set the Mavericks down in order on three ground balls in the ninth to close it out.
Mercy southpaw Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) worked a strong first 7.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out five.
McLasky gave Adelphi three innings of hitless, scoreless relief to earn the victory.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22, at Ramapo in a non-conference matchup.
