Mavericks Battle for 8-7 Win Over Queens

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team collected 12 hits en route to an 8-7 East Coast Conference (ECC) victory over visiting Queens College on Tuesday.  The Mavericks improved to 10-18 overall and 6-8 in ECC play, while the Knights fell to 8-18 overall and 6-10 in the league.

Junior outfielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) led the offense with a 3-for-4 day, including a two-run home run, and scored three runs.  Senior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and senior first baseman Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) went 2-for-5 for the Mavericks.

Queens jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo home run from Ed Hackimer with one out in the top of the first inning, but Mercy answered with a run in the bottom half as Pannullo stole second and freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) took home.

The Mavericks added two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.  Ross had an RBI single and senior outfielder Julian Tosado (Miami, FL) added an RBI double.  They tacked on another run in the fourth with Walsh taking home again as Pannullo stole second to build a 4-1 advantage.

The Knights got two back in the sixth, putting together three hits and taking advantage of a Mercy error, but the Mavericks responded again in the bottom of the frame on Pannullo's two run shot to right field, his first round-tripper of the season.
Matt Moreno

With Mercy up 6-3 in the eighth, Queens rallied once more, scoring three runs on four hits, including a tough hop through the left side by Noel Gerena that plated a pair to tie the game at 6-6.

The Mavericks bounced back in the bottom of the eighth with two out.  The first came on a passed ball with Pannullo on third and sophomore catcher Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) followed with base hit to drive in what would be the game-winning run.

Queens threatened one more time in the ninth as Jovan Santos delivered another tough hop single that drove in a run to cut the score to 8-7 with two outs, but Mercy junior reliever Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) got a strikeout to end the game.

Moreno picked up his first win of the year with 1.2 innings of relief.  Freshman starter Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) worked the first 5.2 innings in a no-decision, striking out three and allowing two earned runs on six hits.

The Mavericks will return to action on Wednesday, April 16, with another ECC contest at Dowling beginning at 3:30 p.m.
