Boxscore

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team rallied from an early deficit, but fell short in its come from behind effort at Molloy, 8-7 on Sunday. The Mavericks are now 9-18 overall and 5-8 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play.  The Lions improved to 21-12 overall and 10-5 in league action.

Freshman Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) went 2-for-5 at the plate for Mercy and also went the first six innings on the mound, allowing five earned runs and striking out six.  Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) and sophomore Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) each had a double and a run batted in.  Senior Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) knocked in two.

After Mercy pushed across a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from Summer, Molloy answered with three runs in each of the next two innings to build a 6-1 lead.  The Mavericks responded with a run in the third, getting an RBI ground out by Summer to trim the deficit to 6-2.

As Walsh settled in on the hill, the Mavericks continued to chip away, scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth frames to pull within two at 6-4.

The Lions got both runs back though in the eighth on RBI doubles from Keith Kenny and T.J. Greig to build an 8-4 cushion.

Mercy was not done yet as it mounted one more comeback in the ninth.  Walsh led off with a single and after stealing second base and a strikeout, Summer drew a walk.  Ross followed with an RBI double to right center and Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tesoriero reached on a fielder's choice that plated Summer and Ross would score on a wild pitch to pull the Mavericks within one at 8-7, but Molloy reliever Scott Porter got the final out to end the threat and the game.

The Mavericks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 15, when they play host to Queens College in another ECC contest beginning at 3:30 p.m.
