Mavericks Split with Molloy; Take Opener 5-2, Fall 13-3 in Game Two
DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College baseball team split an East Coast Conference (ECC) doubleheader with visiting Molloy College on Saturday. The Mavericks won the opener 5-2, before dropping the second game 13-3.
Freshman right-hander Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) went the distance in game one, scattering just six hits and striking out three to earn his third win of the year. Sophomore Marc Dern (Valley Stream, NY) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Junior Ken Mundy (Valley Stream, NY) went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in. Senior Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) also went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Mavericks.
Mercy (9-17, 5-7 ECC) struck for three runs in the second inning, getting an RBI double from Mundy and a two-run single from sophomore Justin Muscarella (Plainedge, NY).
Molloy (20-12, 9-5 ECC) got a run in the fourth on a Chris Irwin (Mahopac, NY) sacrifice fly, and cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth with an RBI double off the bat of T.J. Greig (Staten Island, NY).

The Mavericks added two insurance runs in the eighth, getting an RBI single from freshman Steve Campbell (Staten Island, NY) and a squeeze bunt by Mundy. DiCarlo then set the Lions down in order in the ninth on three ground balls. He yielded just one base hit over the final four innings.
Molloy jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first inning of game two. The big blows were a two-run double from Robert LaRusso (Bayside, NY), followed by a two-run home run by Andrew Scavuzzo (Kings Park, NY). After the Lions added a run in the second frame, they tacked on seven more in the third to build a 13-0 lead.
Mercy got all three of its runs in the fourth inning. Two came on wild pitches with runners on third and the other on an RBI single by senior Roberto Martinez (Yonkers, NY).
Lions' reliever Andrew Kapela (Middle Village, NY) then came on to pitch three scoreless innings of relief, striking out a pair to close it out. Starter Steven DeJesus (Dominican Republic) worked the first four innings, striking out four to move to 6-1 on the year.
Mercy relievers Bobby Engelhard (Oceanside, NY), Erik Dodge (Fabius, NY) and Frank DeRosa (Harrison, NY) combined for 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mavericks and Lions will complete their series with a single game at Molloy on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
