Dowling Holds Off Mercy Baseball 3-1

DOBBS FERRY, NY -  The Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Dowling College on Wednesday afternoon.  The Mavericks are now 8-16 overall and 4-6 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Golden Lions improved to 15-11 overall and 6-4 in the league.

After three scoreless innings, Dowling broke through for a run in the fourth. Brian Ferguson drew a one out walk and advanced to third on a single by Kevin Reese. Ferguson then scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Lions added two more runs in the fifth, getting an RBI single from Daniel Pembroke and a bases loaded walk by Reese, to pull ahead 3-0.

Dowling starter Chris Piotrowski shut down the Mercy offense for the first eight innings, scattering just four hits and walking only one.  He gave way to closer Joe Trainor for the ninth, where Mercy threatened to make a comeback.

Vinnie Tesoriero (Glen Head, NY) led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. After a fly out, Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on a throwing error. Steve Summer (East Meadow, NY) then plated Pannullo with a single up the middle, but Trainor got the final out to seal the decision.

Mercy southpaw Steve Merslich (Flushing, NY) worked the first 6.2 innings, giving up just four hits and striking out three.  Alex Rodriguez (Miami, FL) and Matt Moreno (Harrison, NY) combined to work 2.1 innings of shutout relief for the Mavericks.

Mercy will return to action on Friday, April 11 at UMass Lowell.
