Mercy College Baseball Drops a Pair at C.W. Post, 3-1 and 2-0
BROOKVILLE, NY - The Mercy College baseball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader at C.W. Post on Sunday, dropping the opener 3-1 and game two by a score of 2-0. The Mavericks are now 8-15 overall and 4-5 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play, while the Pioneers improved to 12-15 overall and 5-5 in the league.
Senior third baseman Craig Ross (Bellmore, NY) led the Mercy offense with three hits on the day. Junior right fielder Chris Pannullo (Dix Hills, NY) had an RBI single in the first game.
C.W. Post struck first in the opener, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning on RBI singles from Steve Algarroba and Tim Sylvester. The Pioneers got another run scoring single from Algarroba in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead.
Mercy got its run in the eighth on Pannullo's single through the right side that plated Mike Ferrante (Long Beach, NY) who led off with a walk, but Pioneer reliever Anthony Rinaldi closed it out with a perfect ninth.
Game two was another pitchers' duel with the first three innings going scoreless. C.W. Post broke through for its runs in the fourth and sixth innings, taking advantage of infield errors.
Mercy's best scoring opportunities came in the fifth and seventh frames, but Pioneer starter Bo Budkevics worked out of jams each time.
Freshman Anthony DiCarlo (Red Hook, NY) worked eight innings for Mercy in the first game, striking out seven. Freshman Steve Marsar (Seaford, NY) suffered his first loss of the season in game two despite not allowing an earned run and yielding only three hits in 6.1 innings.
The Mavericks will look to bounce back on Wednesday, April 9, when they host Dowling in another ECC tilt at 3:30 p.m.
