Mercy's Matt Walsh Earns Ping! Spotlight Performance of the Week Presented by Ringor
DOBBS FERRY, NY - Freshman outfielder/pitcher Matt Walsh (Staten Island, NY) earned a Ping! Spotlight Performance of the Week Presented by Ringor on Tuesday.
Walsh batted .471 (8-for-17) last week and scored five runs for the Mavericks. He also knocked in two runs and was a perfect 6-for-6 on stolen base attempts. In the game against Dowling, Walsh used his speed to steal home with the bases loaded. Walsh also collected two doubles and had a .588 slugging percentage.
He went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two steals against Dowling. In the first game of a doubleheader against Bridgeport on Saturday, he went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two runs scored and three stolen bases. In the finale of the series against Bridgeport on Sunday, he went 2-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base.
The St. Peter's Boys High School alumnus also performed well on the mound. Against Dowling he threw 5.2 innings of one-hit relief and stuck out four batters.
On the season, Walsh leads the team with a .333 batting average and with 10 steals (11 attempts). He is tied for the team lead with 14 runs scored and has a team best .463 on base percentage.
Walsh has a 1.86 ERA in 9.2 innings pitched over four appearances. He has struck out nine batters and allowed only two extra base hits.
The Mavericks are 8-13 overall and 4-3 in East Coast Conference (ECC) play. Mercy will resume ECC action against C.W. Post in a weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m.
